Happy first day of spring!
I am Jacqui Cebrian, resident of Menlo Park, bike commuter and currently chair of the Complete Streets Commission. My comments are my own perspective.
It has taken a shockingly long time to get actual bike lanes on the city designated "School Bike Safety Route". I didnt realize it would take nearly a year to actually get compliance - and Im being optimistic since weve yet to achieve full compliance with city regulations. I ride down Middle Avenue in part or in whole on my way to and from work. Most of the stretch between University and Olive has been clear of parked cars for some time now. Of note, the section in front of the apartments is never the problem - even as we were concerned about how those parking needs would be handled. They seemed to have sorted it out.
My real complaint are the cars blocking the bike lane daily across the street from the park. I would expect that the bike lanes by the park with the giant new playground (making it appear to be a place children would want to be) would be the most obvious ones to keep clear and safe since we expect children to be going to this park. I have been asking for enforcement for months. I was told we needed more "No Parking" signs since we couldnt ticket anybody who couldnt see a sign from where they were parking. The signs are up, the parking continues. Im attaching an image with cars from three days in a row recently. 3/13 at 4:55, 3/14 at 12:08, 3/15 at 6:25. There were 3 or more cars parked in that section across from the park each day. There are cars actually parked on the green paint of the bike lane. It is clear that it isnt a lack of information - it is a lack of consideration. And to that I would ask that the city at least stop allowing free parking in the bike lanes. Dont be like Atherton. Bike lanes you can park in arent bike lanes. My mother wants me to survive my commute to work every bit as much as the parents of the younger children who use this roadway.
Please do something about the persistent flouting of traffic rules in this town before someone is killed.
