Burgess Pool cut operation hours again!

My name is Felix Kolotinsky, and I am a resident of the unincorporated area of Menlo Park, North Fair Oaks. As a daily swimmer and a long-time user of Burgess Pool, I am deeply concerned about the recent dramatic reduction in operating hours implemented by Menlo Swim and Sport, under Tim Sheeper’s management.

This change significantly limits access to the pool, especially during peak hours after 3:00 PM—when many working residents are finally able to swim. With only three lanes remaining open for public lap swim in the Performance Pool during this time, the pool will become overcrowded, creating unsafe and frustrating conditions.

While I understand and fully support sharing lanes with fellow swimmers, having more than three people per lane—especially with varied swimming paces and skill levels—increases the risk of injury, confusion, and conflict. It compromises both safety and the quality of the swimming experience for everyone.

I often visit the pool during my lunch break or on days off to enjoy a mid-day swim. These new cuts now fall into what appears to be Sheeper’s “Fiesta” or reserved hours, further reducing public access to a community facility.

How was such a decision allowed to go forward under the oversight of the Menlo Park City Council? Should the personal business interests of a private operator outweigh the needs of the Menlo Park community?

I am expressing my concern not just as an individual, but as part of a larger group of swimmers who rely on Burgess Pool for health, wellness, and recreation. I plan to reach out to other members and encourage them to voice their opposition to these changes as well.

I respectfully urge the City Council to review and reconsider this decision in light of its impact on the community you serve.

Sincerely,
Felix Kolotinsky
