Dear Honorable Council Members,

I would like to express my opinion that the idea of banning gas in people’s homes is over-reaching and is a direct infringement on an individual’s right to private property. But, even more importantly, where is the scientific evidence that indicates the ban of gas in homes even in the entire state of California will make any dent in saving the ozone layer? The staff and EQC seem to focus solely on cost analysis. Where is the science supporting this idea?

What would be impactful on protecting the ozone layer, would be a statewide effort to better manage our forest fires. The effects of the California fires on the ozone layer is significantly more damaging to the ozone layer than people cooking and heating their homes with gas. I think the City Council should focus their efforts on organizing California cities to petition the governor and the legislators to demand better forest management. Let’s keep focused on what is truly going to make a difference.

Does the council actually believe this ban will have any effect on climate change? Taking away gas appliances is a highly personal infringement and yet another regulation on the residents. Does anyone remember the book Nineteen Eighty Four? Orwellian is what best describes this idea.

Sincerely,
Mary
