Dear Council Members, I am a resident of Sharon Heights and mother to a 1 and 3 year old. I am also a pediatric neurologist serving this community. I am deeply concerned by the lack of gun control in this country and demand better for our city. Walking into my child's daycare and finding 18 usually rambunctious 3 year olds hiding silently in a small bathroom as part of a "lock-down drill" was bone-chilling. Seeing a child with his forehead blown off was unforgivable. We live in a community where people and particularly young people are under extreme stress and have significant psychological issues. This is manifest by the rampant psychiatric problems in our high schoolers leading to suicide at exceptional rates. Access to guns is the best predictor of successful suicide and puts us all at risk for mass shootings. At a bare minimum, I ask that the Council consider enacting a safe gun storage ordinance similar to those past within the last year by several cities in San Mateo County and by the County of San Mateo.
