Dear Mayor, Vice Mayor, council members, and honorable staff,
It’s me Jenny Michel, native and renting resident in D3, disabled bus rider, and recovering homeless teacher.
Personal comments:
As you may be aware, SB79, which allows for dense housing near transit hubs, is moving through the legislature before the current session ends.
Because of my syncope issues, you know I should refrain from driving a vehicle. Both I and our son at Hillview, rely on transit to get around. We have had first/last mile issues and we are not alone. We’d love to relocate and live within walking distance to our transit hubs. SB79 would open up housing opportunities for us that are simply illegal now and remove barriers surrounding the first/last miles.
On the flip side, our transit agencies are looking for long term financial stabilization. SB79 would help infuse our regional agencies with reliable users/riders and allow for leverage of the excess land some of the agencies hold.
Super bonus is that more local workers living at transit hubs means phasing out super commuters which is a city goal. It also means less vehicle traffic overall, another goal of ours.
I feel that SB79 is a win win for all. If you haven’t already, please join me in voicing support to our local legislators on this critical bill.
Thank you!
Jenny from the Coleman Place block
