Dear Council,
As a tech entrepreneur and capitalist, I find it curious that my fellow
capitalists expect parking to be provided and maintained by the city, for
free, in unlimited supply. If every other kind of real estate is subject to
market forces, why should parking be the exception?
Establishing a *market for parking before we plan our downtown development
is essential*. Through pricing, shared-use agreements with local garages,
demand management, and infrastructure improvements, we can use existing
resources far more effectively. The City’s own Circulation Element supports
“creating a healthy market for parking where spaces may be bought, sold,
rented, and leased like any other commodity.”
The cultural tide is shifting too. Rivian just launched an e-bike (*Also*)
with the message that short trips should be made by bike, not car. Even car
companies now recognize that not every trip needs a car.
Publicly funded garages burden taxpayers, encourage more driving, and
undermine downtown vitality. Smarter parking management, transit, and bike
infrastructure are better investments.
I urge the council to align with its own planning guidance and establish a
market for parking rather than expand subsidies for free parking.
Respectfully,
Jonathan Weiner
