Appreciation for Action on Menlo Park Aquatics, October 2025

Subject: Appreciation for Action on Menlo Park Aquatics, October 2025

Date: October 28, 2025

Dear City Council Members,

I want to express my appreciation for your recent action to address the
financial shortfall affecting Menlo Park’s aquatic programs. Your decision
to allocate funds to maintain service levels at both Burgess and Belle
Haven Pools demonstrates a commitment to sustaining access to important
community resources, particularly at a time when differences in demand and
community needs has created financial challenges for the operator.

While this funding does not offset the losses already absorbed by the
operator Menlo Swim and Sport, it will meaningfully ease the financial
strain anticipated in 2025 and 2026. The combined swim communities are
deeply grateful for the resumption of open hours and for the City’s ongoing
collaboration with Menlo Swim & Sport to provide programming that meets the
needs of all residents. Having both facilities active and accessible
supports a stronger, more inclusive aquatic community in Menlo Park.

Looking ahead, I am encouraged by the formation of the study group to
evaluate the potential hybrid operating model. I believe the concept of
Belle Haven Community Center managing pool programs and revenue, with Menlo
Swim & Sport serving as the safety and operations provider, offers a
thoughtful balance—aligning with the Belle Haven community’s goals for
greater local decision-making while maintaining the professional standards
needed for pool safety and management.

Thank you again for listening to community feedback and for taking action
to sustain Menlo Park’s aquatic resources. Your responsiveness has made a
tangible difference for many residents who value these spaces not just for
recreation, but for connection, health, and community.

Respectfully,
Kim Freitas
