Hello City Council Members,
I would like to submit my heartfelt endorsement for Sally Cole for the open District 5 city council member position. I got to know Ms. Cole when she joined the Complete Streets Commission in 2021. She quickly established herself as someone who was interested and engaged in city-wide issues (not just her own neighborhood). Ive served on city commissions and outreach committees for 13 of the 15 years Ive lived in Menlo Park. It is a rare individual who joins such groups and is prepared to dive into the work straight away. I have found Ms. Cole to be that type of individual. Whether it is questioning staff, attending council outreach meetings pertaining to Complete Streets issues, or stepping up to leadership roles, Commissioner Cole is all in when it comes to helping Menlo Park retain its community character while also making space for change.
I have no hesitance for this endorsement. Sally Cole wants to use her time and expertise to help Menlo Park continue what it does well and improve what could be better. She is an advocate for public involvement in the process and for the work city staff does, often invisibly. It is difficult to attend to these often disparate groups, but Ms. Coles resume is solid proof that she is up to the challenge. A last note about why I believe she is a good fit for this council seat is how she convinced me to take on the Vice-Chair role on the Complete Streets Commission. I was reluctant, but she helped me to see why that role would be beneficial both to the neighborhood I represent and the wider optics of city leadership. I am grateful for the way that Sally sees what can be and works to help people be comfortable making it come true.
Our city is lucky to have engaged citizens like Sally Cole and I firmly believe she will serve District 5 and the City of Menlo Park well. I hope that you will choose her to fill this spot - even knowing that it means Ill have to take the Chair spot sooner than I was planning.
