Honorable Council members,
Regarding the request for a permit for live entertainment at a new restaurant next to Guild Theater.
As a resident near downtown, I am glad to see the opportunity for additional evening entertainment in Menlo Park within walking distance.
Regarding loading and unloading, I have concerns about the proposal to use spaces on El Camino Real that could block potential bicycle facilities. With more infill development in the downtown area, the city benefits from having robust and safe pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure helping more people get in and around without driving.
I recommend referring this issue to the Complete Streets commission to consider alternatives for loading/unloading that would minimize impacts to pedestrian and bicycle travel while supporting the additional entertainment use.
Several years ago, there was a development proposal that had potential impacts on the loading/unloading of supplies for Draegers, and had potential impacts on bicycle and pedestrian travel. The issue was referred to Complete Streets. For disclosure, I served on the Complete Streets Commission at that time.
City Staff worked with the developer and the business users with loading/unloading needs, and created alternatives that were reviewed by the Commission, which provided recommendations to City Council. The outcome was a solution that addressed the needs of the users and uses.
In Menlo Park in the evening, there is quite a lot of space. I believe that professional staff and commissioners are likely to be able to come up with creative solutions.
Thank you for your consideration,
- Adina
