single family zoning discussion

Dear council members -

I recently read about the council's interest in hiring a consultant to explore the possibility of changing zoning in Menlo to end single-family zoning.

My wife and I live on Crane Street, which as you know is multi-family zoned, in a single-family home, which we own. I like where I live and have no problem with the zoning.

I can't imagine, however, why the council would want to explore this option. It will be hotly opposed by people living in single-family zones, and I would not blame anyone opposing it. They have purchased homes at prices that reflect single family zoning. To change that by town-fiat would be very unfair.

Given that the zoning change would not impact the 3,000-unit goal for the city (as I understand it) in any case, I'd ask that the council redirect and its energies to more constructive efforts to support the development of those units and the associated work that needs to be done to promote improved traffic / commute options.

Thank you, -Ned Desmond
