Dear Mayor Nash and Members of the City Council,
I am writing to express my support for the public comments submitted by Ms. Meredith Rohr and Miss Shontelle Watkins regarding the Belle Haven pool.
I share the concerns raised about the Hybrid Task Force findings, particularly the possibility that additional public funds may be allocated to the current operator without clear accounting or transparency. I am also concerned that the current operator appears unwilling to expand programming, adjust hours to better meet community needs, or improve communication so residents can stay informed about pool access and offerings.
Given these concerns, I respectfully urge the City Council to refocus efforts on how to operationalize programs and hours that truly serve Belle Haven residents, whether with the current operator or through alternative models. The goal should be a system that is responsive, transparent, and aligned with the needs of the community.
I also echo Miss Watkins’ perspective that the pool is a valued community asset. There is a strong desire for it to thrive as an inclusive and accessible space. At present, however, the hours, affordability, and programming do not fully meet the needs of working families, youth, and seniors.
In addition, I want to emphasize the importance of safety. Ensuring adequate lifeguard staffing is critical. Insufficient staffing can create serious risks, including potential injury to pool users and liability for the City. The Belle Haven pool should be operated first and foremost as a community resource that prioritizes safety, access, and service to Menlo Park residents, not as a profit-driven facility.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Eduardo L. Hernandez
26-Year Menlo Park Resident
